Sentence: Definition & Types
වාක්‍යය: අර්ථ දැක්වීම සහ වර්ග
A sentence is the biggest unit of any language. In English, it starts with a capital letter and finishes with a full-stop, or a question mark, or an Exclamation mark.
වාක්‍යයක් යනු ඕනෑම භාෂාවක විශාලතම ඒකකයයි. ඉංග්‍රීසියෙන්, එය ලොකු අකුරකින් ආරම්භ වී සම්පූර්ණ නැවතුමකින් හෝ ප්‍රශ්නාර්ථ ලකුණකින් හෝ විස්මිත සලකුණකින් අවසන් වේ
The sentence is generally defined as a word or a group of words that expresses a thorough idea by giving a statement/order, or asking a question, or exclaiming.
වාක්‍යය සාමාන්‍යයෙන් අර්ථ දැක්වෙන්නේ ප්‍රකාශයක් / නියෝගයක් ලබා දීමෙන් හෝ ප්‍රශ්නයක් ඇසීමෙන් හෝ උද්දීපනය කිරීමෙන් ගැඹුරු අදහසක් ප්රකාශ කරන වචනයක් හෝ වචන සමූහයක් ලෙස ය.
Example:

Ideally, a sentence requires at least one subject and one verb. Sometimes the subject of a sentence can be hidden, but the verb must be visible and present in the sentence. Verb is called the heart of a sentence.
වාක් යයකට අවම වශයෙන් එක් කතෘ කෙනෙක් හා එක් ක්‍රියා පදයක් අවශ්‍ය වේ. සමහර වෙලාවට වාක්‍යයක කතෘ සැඟවිය හැකි නමුත් ක්‍රියා පදය පෙනෙන්නට තිබිය යුතු අතර වාක්‍යයේ තිබිය යුතුය. ක්‍රියා පදය වාක්‍යයේ හදවත ලෙස හැඳින්වේ.
Example:

Do it. (In this sentence, a subject ‘you’ is hidden but verb ‘do’ is visible)

In other words, a complete English sentence must have three characteristics.
වෙනත් වචන වලින් කිවහොත්, සම්පූර්ණ ඉංග්‍රීසි වාක්‍යයක ලක්ෂණ තුනක් තිබිය යුතුය.

First, in written form, a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period ( Full stop)[.], a note of interrogation ( a question mark) [?], or a note of exclamation ( an exclamation mark) [!]

Second, it must express a complete thought, not fragmented.

Third, it must contain at least one subject (hidden/visible) and one verb comprising an independent clause. ( An independent clause contains an independent subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.)

Types of Sentences
Structurally, Sentences are four types.
ව්‍යුහාත්මකව, වාක්‍ය වර්ග හතරකි.

Simple Sentence
A simple sentence must have a single clause (a single verb) which is independent, and it can not take another clause.
සරල වාක්‍යයක ස්වාධීන වන තනි වගන්තියක් (තනි ක්‍රියා පදයක්) තිබිය යුතු අතර එයට වෙනත් වගන්තියක් ගත නොහැක.
Example:
I always wanted to become a driver. (one clause - one verb)
මට නිතරම අවශ්‍ය වූයේ රියදුරෙකු වීමටයි. (එක් වගන්තියක් - එක් ක්‍රියා පදයක්)
Compound sentence
A compound sentence must have more than one independent clause with no dependent clauses. Some specific conjunctions, punctuation, or both are used to join together these clauses.
සංයුක්ත වාක්‍යයක යැපෙන වගන්ති නොමැති ස්වාධීන වගන්ති එකකට වඩා තිබිය යුතුය. මෙම වගන්ති එකට සම්බන්ධ කිරීම සඳහා සමහර විශේෂිත සන්ධි පද, විරාම ලකුණු හෝ දෙකම භාවිතා වේ.
Example:
I always wanted to become a driver, and she wanted to become a writer. (Two independent clauses - Two verbs.)
මට නිතරම රියදුරෙකු වීමට අවශ්‍ය වූ අතර ඇයට ලේඛිකාවක් වීමට අවශ්‍ය විය. (ස්වාධීන වගන්ති දෙකක් - ක්‍රියා පද දෙකක්.)
Complex sentence
A complex sentence also has more than one clause but one of them must be an independent clause and the other/others must be (a) dependent clause (es). There are also some particular connectors for the clauses of a complex sentence to be connected.
සංකීර්ණ වාක්‍යයකට එක වගන්තියකට වඩා ඇති නමුත් ඒවායින් එකක් ස්වාධීන වගන්තියක් විය යුතු අතර අනෙක / අනෙක් ඒවා යැපෙන වගන්තියක් හෝ වගන්ති විය යුතුය. සංකීර්ණ වාක්‍යයක වගන්ති සම්බන්ධ කිරීම සඳහා විශේෂිත සම්බන්ධක කිහිපයක් ද තිබේ.
Example:
I know that you always wanted to be a Driver. (Here, a dependent clause is followed by a connector and an independent clause. The other way around is also possible.)
මම දන්නවා, ඔබට සැමවිටම අවශ්‍ය වූයේ රියදුරෙකු වීමටයි. (මෙන්න, යැපෙන වගන්තියක් සම්බන්ධකය සහ ස්වාධීන වගන්තියක් අනුගමනය කරයි. අනෙක් මාර්ගය ද හැකි ය.)
Compound - Complex sentence
A compound-complex sentence (or complex–compound sentence) is a mixture of the features of compound and complex sentences in one sentence. So, it must contain at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
සංයුක්ත-සංකීර්ණ වාක්‍යයක් (හෝ සංකීර්ණ-සංයුක්ත වාක්‍යයක්) යනු එක් වාක්‍යයක සංයුක්ත හා සංකීර්ණ වාක්‍යවල ලක්ෂණවල මිශ්‍රණයකි. එබැවින්, එය අවම වශයෙන් ස්වාධීන වගන්ති දෙකක් හෝ අවම වශයෙන් එක් යැපෙන වගන්තියක්වත් අඩංගු විය යුතුය.
Example:
I know that, you always wanted to become a driver, but I always wanted to become a writer.
මම දන්නවා, ඔබට සැමවිටම රියදුරෙකු වීමට අවශ්‍ය වූ නමුත් මට සෑම විටම ලේඛකයෙකු වීමට අවශ්‍ය විය.
(Here, one dependent clause is followed by a complex connector and two independent clauses with a compound conjunction between them.)

Functionally, sentences are of mainly four types: - ක්‍රියාකාරීව, වාක්‍ය ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් වර්ග හතරකි:

Examples of four sentences types
Declarative sentence
An assertive sentence (declarative sentence) simply expresses an opinion/feeling, or makes a statement, or describes things. In other words, it declares something. This type of sentence ends with a period (i.e., a full-stop).
ස්ථිර වාක්‍යයක් (ප්‍රකාශන වාක්‍යයක්) හුදෙක් මතයක් / හැඟීමක් ප්රකාශ කරයි, නැතහොත් ප්‍රකාශයක් කරයි, නැතහොත් දේවල් විස්තර කරයි. වෙනත් වචන වලින් කිවහොත්, එය යමක් ප්රකාශ කරයි. මෙම වාක්‍යය කාල පරිච්ඡේදයකින් අවසන් වේ (එනම්, පූර්ණ නැවතුම).
Example:

I want to be a good student. (a statement)

Imperative sentence
We utilize a basic sentence to make a solicitation or to provide an order. Basic sentences for the most part end with a period (i.e., a full stop), however under particular conditions, it can end with a note of outcry (i.e., shout mark).
ඉල්ලීමක් කිරීමට හෝ විධානයක් දීමට අපි විධානාත්මක වාක්‍යයක් භාවිතා කරමු. විධානාත්මක වාක්‍ය සාමාන්‍යයෙන් කාල පරිච්ඡේදයකින් අවසන් වේ (එනම්, සම්පූර්ණ නැවතුම), නමුත් යම් යම් තත්වයන් යටතේ, එය පුදුම කිරීමේ සටහනකින් අවසන් විය හැකිය (එනම්, විශ්මය දනවන ලකුණ).

Interrogative sentence
An interrogative sentence asks a question. Interrogative sentence must end with a note of interrogation (i.e., question mark)

Exclamatory sentence
An exclamatory sentence expresses overflow of emotions. These emotions can be of happiness, wonder, sorrow, anger, etc.
විශ්මය ජනක වාක්‍යයක් හැඟීම් ප්රකාශ කරයි. මෙම හැඟීම් සතුට, පුදුමය, ශෝකය, කෝපය යනාදිය විය හැකිය.
Example:
